Manifesto of the Movement More Memory

In the past day 5 of October, a set of citizens congregated to the old Headquarters of the PIDE/DGS, reaffirming the public protest against the conversion of that building in closed condominium and against the deletion of the memory of the fascism and the suffering caused to the Portuguese together. In the place, it was then a band with the names of many of that they had been assassinated by the dictatorship that almost oppressed Portugal during 50 years.

It is purpose of this civic initiative to continue this share, converting it into the symbolic impulse of a vast movement of citizens, plural and opened, of requirement of safeguards, inquiry and spreading of the memory of the fascism and the resistance, as responsibility of the State, the set of being able them public and of the society.

1. We complain of them to be able public that, more than 30 years passed on the 25 of April, assume the responsibility to constitute a national public space of preservation and pedagogical spreading of the collective memory on the crimes of the Been call New and the resistance to the dictatorship, that uses to advantage the emblematic spaces of this reality as they are the Aljube, the Fort of Peniche, Caxias, the room of the plenary assembly of Boa-Hora, the headquarters trunk of the PIDE/DGS and its Delegation of the Port, and that it co-ordinates its share with the valuable work developed in this domain for diverse institutions;

2. We condemn the conversion of the building of the headquarters of the PIDE/DGS in closed condominium and demand the creation of a space and a memorial element in that area, that assure the memory and the homage to the suffering of many Portuguese and the conviction of the crimes committed for the policy politics of the fascism, that constituted one of the main pillars of the dictatorship;

3. We appeal to all the citizens and organizations that multiply, partilhem and take in its hands, for the forms and initiatives that to understand, the lasting preservation of the collective memory of the combats for the democracy and the freedom in Portugal, as indispensable element to the construction of a better future.

Because without memory it does not have future.

October of 2005.
